Chandrayaan-3 successfully inserted into lunar orbit, says ISRO

India’s third lunar mission Chandrayaan-3 successfully entered the orbit of the moon on Saturday after traversing for over 300,000 km in three weeks in deep space following a precise course meticulously charted by the Indian Space Research Organisation.

Aiming for a Soft Landing


Over the next 18 days, ISRO will gradually reduce the probe’s velocity, guiding it to a lower orbit of approximately 100 km. Chandrayaan-3 is scheduled to attempt a soft landing near the lunar south pole on August 23 at 5.47 pm, marking the most awaited moment of the mission. This delicate operation requires precision and meticulous planning to ensure a successful landing.

The Role of SHAPE Payload

Beyond the landing, Chandrayaan-3’s mission extends to studying Earth-like exo-planets. After the rover-carrying lander is separated, the remaining part of the space probe will carry a unique payload named SHAPE (Spectro-polarimetry of Habitable Planet Earth). Designed by scientists at the Space Application Centre in Ahmedabad and UR Rao Satellite Centre, this payload will observe Earth to understand its atmosphere from space. The SHAPE payload plays a crucial role in the mission.

Identifying Habitable Exo-planets


SHAPE’s observations of Earth will help in identifying tell-tale signs that are characteristic of habitable planets. By studying the spectrograph data and high-resolution images, scientists aim to gain insights into the atmospheres of different exo-planets.
